What Measure Involves

A pre-commissioned BAS mode adjusts outdoor-air dampers, recirculation, filtration, fans and exhaust during smoke or severe particulate pollution. Using reliable outdoor air-quality information and preferably indoor/outdoor PM₂.₅ sensing, it limits polluted-air entry while maintaining required ventilation, exhaust make-up and pressure relationships. Effective operation assumes that air-entry pathways can be controlled. It is distinct from life-safety smoke-control systems for internal fires.

Climate Resilience Safety

Coordinates ventilation to reduce smoke and dust infiltration while maintaining appropriate airflow, ventilation and pressure relationships.

Environmental Sustainability Low Carbon

No significant direct low-carbon benefit; added sensing, controls, filtration and fan operation may increase equipment and energy demand.

Cost Value Narrative

Controls, sensors, integration, commissioning and specialist support are usually disproportionate for routine PHCFs. Simpler measures—envelope sealing, portable filtration and protected low-smoke rooms—generally offer better value. The measure becomes more defensible where compatible HVAC/BAS already exists and severe smoke events recur.
